I fondly recall the special times when Nunnie and I would venture over to nearby Mount Auburn Cemetery and walk together through the grounds. Nunnie loved how beautiful it was. At the time, I mostly joined her on these excursions so I could spend time with her. It wasn ' t until years later that I would come to love the Cemetery the way she did, in and of itself. And, I must admit, that love grew by chance.
As an avid walker, during the spring, summer, and early autumn, I began to make it a habit of walking through the Cemetery on my way home from work as I now also lived nearby. During my many walks, I learned that no matter the season, the beauty inside those walls never ceased to amaze me. Whether it’ s the white Dogwood or pink Magnolia trees bursting open in spring, the abundance of native and nonnative flowers blooming in summer, or the vibrant foliage of fall, Mount Auburn Cemetery has become a place I love. I walk and listen to music, photograph its abundant birds, trees, and wildlife. It is also where I go to honor my Dad and my grandparents who now rest at peace in this most sacred of places. It’ s also a respite where I go to regain focus and at times just to escape the stresses of life for a bit.
