TRUSTEE NEWS , SPRING 2022

“ All three of these Trustees were valued colleagues during my tenure as President . I join the Cemetery in mourning them and sending condolences to their families . My closest relationship was with Jim . He had been a trustee for some time when I was appointed President in 1988 , and with the retirement of several of the older trustees soon after I came aboard , the younger trustees were eager to work with me to build a new future for the Cemetery . Jim was always very supportive of me and our new initiatives and he was the obvious candidate to become the Cemetery ’ s first Board Chair . Marion joined the board about a year after I did and was very instrumental in helping me move the Cemetery forward , particularly in establishing the legal framework for our growing fundraising program . I served with Bill for five years and remember his wonderful sense of humor and interest in everything we were doing . With their deaths it seems like the end of an era . Mount Auburn was fortunate to have their wisdom for so many years , and I shall miss them all personally .” — William C . Clendaniel ,
President Emeritus wo of Mount Auburn ’ s longest serving

T Trustees are departing the Board after the June meeting .

Thomas C . Cooper is the former Chair of the Mount Auburn Cemetery Board of Trustees , a position he held from 2013 to 2017 . As Chair , he oversaw the initiation of important building projects at Mount Auburn including the Egyptian Gateway restoration , the Crematory renovation , and the Bigelow Chapel Extension . Tom was a champion of horticulture and related projects and helped to guide the transformation of the Cemetery ’ s landscape in the years since 1994 when his tenure began .
