How to reduce hamstring injuries?
By Nick Tumminello
I
n addition to attending as many classes as I can at the fitness conferences where I teach throughout the year, I also attend a few physical therapy-based educational conferences, as well. One of the more beneficial educational experiences I had in 2012 was at The Hip Symposium: Clinical Medicine, Functional Science, and Applications to the Hip and Trunk. Several of the presenters at this event (all respected leaders in their field) mentioned that they see the most hamstring injuries (in athletes) from “quick starts.” It’s no secret that if you’re frequently running sprints, you begin with a quick start. It’s also no secret to those who have been around athletics that anecdotally, athletes commonly explode off of the line and injure their hamstring when beginning to sprint.
