Camille vs. Michele In 2011, Michele Letendre was the surprise qualifier along-side shoe-in Camille LeblancBazinet. In 2012, Michele took over as Queen of Canada East, and 2013 was set up for a rematch. Camille won Events 1 and 2 with the fastest “Jackie”, and an overhead squat of 200lbs. Michele tied the game with some time-saving strict muscleups, and 20 unbroken dumbbell snatches at the very end of the hundreds. But Camille pulled ahead by winning the deadlift/boxjumps and stayed there, earning event records in both workouts on day 3 and reclaiming her title. Surviving the 100’s CLB said the goal of this most grueling event would be just to survive. In the East, only Michele Letendre and Tyler Kopacz managed to do so in under 25 minutes. In CanW, none of the ladies conquered that mountain, but 5 men made it to the end, including both Games qualifiers. Even spectators were exhausted from watching this one! The Beard and the Singlet It wouldn’t be a proper CrossFit competition without Lucas Parker’s weightlifting singlet (he likes “the tight feeling of spandex”) and, of course, the manliest beard in CrossFit. His lunging race with the fat bar against Curt Manning was one of many non-wardrobe related highlights featuring the teen wolf. New Faces Games veterans (Parker, Gillespie, LeblancBazinet, Letendre, Larouche, L’Usine, the Centaurs, and Taranis) will be joined this year by some new faces: Simon Paquette of Quebec, Erin Light of the Yukon, Tyson Takasaki, and CrossFit Select. Next Year’s Contenders CanWest’s Jayde Quilty finished in the top 3 in four of the seven WODs. With a bit of polish on her gynamstics skills, we should see Jayde contending for a spot in 2014. In the East, Jean-Michel Riendeau got his first taste of the podium, surprising himself and the crowd by finishing Day 2 in 2nd place. Close Races The race for second in CanE men was so close we were scrambling to work out the math as competitors finished their last few squat cleans. We saw the same in CanW with Team Taranis beating out CFC Crew for second by just 1 point. Overhead Squats This nail-biting event had everyone holding their breath while athletes willed themselves to maintain balance. 20 and under in the top 10 In CanE, 20 year old Pascal Baillargeon finished 6th in the men’s division, and 19 year old “Stone Cold” Perry Hanlon did pistols like a Russian dancer to finish 10th among the ladies. The Crowd From the Fan who showed up dressed as Lucas Parker, to the 5-foot tall posters of favourite athlete’s faces, CrossFitters know how to support their box. Even kids were getting into it, and could be spotted in the stands lunging along with the athletes and push-pressing plastic pipes.?
