India has built many dams and water reservoirs after independence and stood as the
world’s most bountiful dambuilders. More than 4300 dams were constructed in different
parts in India and some are in progress. Nearly two thousand dams among those built
are more than 20 years old attracting many tourists not only in India but also across the

1. Tehri Dam
The Tehri dam found on the river Bhagirathi, located in the state of Uttarakhand
is an earthfilled embankment and multipurpose rock dam. Tehri dam project
started in the year 1978 after conducting relevant studies, but got stopped due to
some political, financial, social and environmental aspects. Somehow the project
geared up with the financial and technical aid of USSR. Tehri dam was
categorized into three phases, first phase got completed in the year 2006,
second phase(Koteshwar dam) in the year 2012 and the third phase is still under
construction.
