COMPANY SPOTLIGHT

Butterfield Group kick-start their powder coating business , PowderWorks , with investment in state-of-the-art Gema system

PowderWorks was formed as a standalone company in 2020 , though it has a long-standing history with powder coating through its parent company Butterfield Group . Born from the relocation and expansion of an existing double-booth and box oven spray shop into what it is today , it holds over 97 years in coating and finishing knowledge , expertise and experience .
Sarah Butterfield , of PowderWorks , explains ‘ Investment into a suspended line allowed for additional capacity not just to cope with the Group ’ s existing customer requirements , which centre around signage , but also to offer our services to other companies in different sectors . The new Gema system means we are now equipped to take on a wide variety and great volume of work , PowderWorks is here for your every powder coating need .’
Prior to investment , a great deal of time was spent exploring the latest market technologies with deep evaluation across the equipment manufacturers . Sarah continued ‘ Our overall vision was for a state-of-the-art powder coating facility offering high quality finishing with a quick turnaround and warranty to suit . It was also important to have the most environmentally-friendly system possible . The energy efficiency and powder waste reduction from the Gema system align with our green credentials ’
A Gema Magic Compact booth with fast colour changing technology was installed along with recycling cyclone , automatic reciprocator guns and manual touch up platforms to deliver high-quality finished products through increasing precision and control whilst also enhancing speed , efficiency and massively reducing waste .
Gema ’ s latest Opticenter , the OC06 , was used to feed the system with powder . This incorporates all-in-one suction technology , Optispeeder hopper with powder level detection , ultrasonic sieve and automated cleaning . These features have all been engineered to make the system as accurate and reliable as possible , whilst keeping the physical footprint low and need for human interaction to a minimum .
Leon Hogg , General Manager UK for Gema , explained ‘ It was clear during the evaluation stages that PowderWorks were keen to invest in the very latest innovations that deliver quality and performance benefits to their future customer base . With the high demand for quality , repeatability and efficiency we quickly arrived at the Magic Compact fast colour change booth , a system that provided the perfect strategic fit when it comes to matching the level of performance and efficiency / waste reduction PowderWorks were looking for . This investment in the very latest technology puts Powderworks in a great position to serve new customers in other sectors as well as ensuring better quality and reliability when coating the signs they make at Butterfield ’
