Galvanizing firm reaches new heights
A galvanizing firm is flying high after processing one of its most complex projects yet for an eye-catching structure at Cranfield University .
Worksop Galvanizing Ltd has been called upon by its customer , Monk Bridge Construction Ltd ., to provide its hot dip galvanizing treatment to over 120 tonnes of steel , used to create an iconic structure that will form the centrepiece of a new Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre ( DARTeC ), being built at the Bedfordshire site .
The unique canopy will be sited next to the research facility and house a retired commercial airliner as a visually striking welcome .
The construction company is a long-standing customer of Worksop Galvanizing , part of Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd , and took advantage of the company ’ s expertise and its galvanizing bath - the largest in Europe .
Jon Newsome , Director at Monk Bridge Construction Ltd , said : “ Due to the location and prominence of the structure it was crucial to ensure it is properly protected against rust and weathering in the future .
“ The abstract shapes and sizes of the pieces making up the structure could have proved challenging to galvanize but thanks to the team ’ s excellent organisational skills and careful planning we ’ re delighted with the end result and Worksop Galvanizing yet again exceeded our expectations .”
The technically demanding project required some careful planning to ensure intricate pieces and heavy tubular sections of over a tonne in weight received the same high quality treatment to protect them from the elements .
Brad Gozzard , Sales Manager at Worksop Galvanizing , said : “ This is definitely one of the more unusual contracts we ’ ve worked on and had to give serious consideration how to treat the more obscure shapes .
“ It was a fantastic and prestigious project to be involved in and to know the structure will form such a centrepiece for years to come is quite humbling .”
