The latest news from the IMF
It is hard to believe that it is March already , but the IMF has been busy over these past three months .
The 9th February saw the hosting of a Webinar for the students on the subject of ‘ Electroless Nickel ’.
The webinar gave a background of how electroless nickel came into being and also described the use of the components and what part they played in the reaction .
The webinar was very well attended with some 30 people and looking back over the year since we started webinars it is pleasing to see that all the effort put into the webinars has paid off . Receiving good recommendations encourages us to continue with them .
If you are a member of the IMF , you can watch them via online video recordings if you did not get the opportunity to see them the first time round .
Our next webinar will be on Electroplating equipment and will be taking place in April so please keep an eye on the website ( www . materials-finishing . org ) to obtain the correct date .
Also our Southern Branch had a seminar called “ Paint the Train ” which was carried out using Zoom .
Again this was very well received and was looking at the paint industry and its role in the Railway industry .
Mike Booth from Indestructible Paint gave a talk on the application of paint to the varying parts of the train , from the harsh conditions of the running gear to the kinder areas such as the decorative finishes for the inside of the coaches . As an outsider you do not give a thought for the conditions that the parts of the train are subjected to but it was interesting to learn about the different applications .
Our second speaker was Dr Paul Lansdell from Warwick university who volunteers at the Forest of Dean Railway Preservation Society . Paul gave an insight into how the preservation societies buy old , rusted rolling stack , carriages and engines and what the go through to get them back into pristine running conditions .
He also described the types of paint used , not only for the rolling stock but also for footbridges , station houses , signalling and all manner of ancillary equipment .
The Southern Branch are holding another Zoom seminar on Wednesday 21st April and this will be on Cleaning and preparation of metals prior to plating and a repeat of the Electroless Nickel webinar .
The meeting will start at 19-15 and information on how to attend is on the website .
Going forward to later in the year , the IMF are joining up with Fischer Instrumentation to produce a webinar on where measuring equipment is used in conjunction with a finished coating .
This webinar will be on Wednesday 16th June ( details and more information to be announced ).
As always , the IMF is looking for new members . New members are the life blood of helping to ensure that the IMF continues to prosper and support people who wish to learn more about the interesting world of Materials Finishing .
