concerns with uncertainty higher than ± 50-100 ° C ( thermal paints ). Moreover , thermal paints ( used only at the lower temperature range ) require dedicated short tests and cannot be used for multi-cycle operations , while the cost of each test is estimated by our customers as $ 1M- $ 2M .
The proposed system will allow customers to measure temperature data continuously without data gaps . It will allow design engineers in the areas of power generation , aerospace , automotive , oil & gas and industrial processes to validate component designs , cooling strategies and thermal models more accurately . Therefore , the system would enable the development of more efficient engines with lower CO2 emissions .
About the Thermal History Technology
The Thermal History Technology is a unique luminescence-based sensing technology which enables engineers to record past temperatures on inaccessible components . The temperature measurement capability reaches from around 150 ° C to 1,500 ° C and above . This makes the technology very useful for the evaluation and design of missioncritical components in harsh environments such as a gas turbine or internal combustion engines . The materials used in the Thermal History Technology have innate luminescence which permanently changes due to thermal exposure , allowing the temperature to be measured by non-destructive excitation and detection of the luminescence light . The measurement device can be scanned across the surface to produce an accurate thermal profile of the surface . The materials are deposited using techniques pioneered for the most challenging applications and can survive for a long duration under high thermal and mechanical loads , offering both short- and long-term measurement of thermal characteristics .

About Cranfield University
Cranfield University is a wholly post-graduate organisation with a strong industrial engineering focus . This project falls within the Surface Engineering and Precision Institute ( SEPI ) at Cranfield , which encompasses the ‘ National High Temperature Surface Engineering Centre ’ ( NHTSEC ). The centre has established a world-wide reputation for its expertise in design , testing , and analysis of coating systems and surface treatments for components subject to extreme high temperatures in hostile environments . The main research activities relate to the design , manufacture , and testing of protective coatings to allow engineering systems to operate in harsher and more demanding environments , the development of in-situ diagnostics , and the design of surface engineering solutions at the systems level to permit full integration of the coating system into the manufacturing process . Within SEPI , the NHTSEC also owns and operates coating production equipment of commercial size and standard .
