S utton Tools recommends that in difficult to machine materials the tapping drill holes should be drilled as large as practical whilst maintaining sufficient strength in the produced thread.
This will need to be determined for each individual application. By decreasing the % thread engagement the tapping torque required is reduced and the tool life can be increased.
