Waste

In November, last year, I was finding out, to my surprise and happiness, that my hometown, Sibiu, was finally taking a stand in the protection of the environment. After so many projects that made the people in our city understand that there is, unfortunately may I add, a real problem regarding our environment, we were finally doing something about it.

Basically, with the help of my school and the project I was in, Erasmus+ “Sustainable consumption and production”, I was able to visit “The Sorting and Compost Station” from Șura Mică, a village nearby Sibiu, where we were shown by two representatives from the “ Association for Intercommunity Development” representatives everything that was to know: the devices used, how they work and how they will help our community. The European funded station, though, wasn’t yet opened. There were no technological problems and everything was there, but we live in a world where nothing can be done without the approval of the city council, and although it was approved, it took a lot of work and time to defeat all the opponents and the problems that appeared.

But better late than never! This year, from the first of November, the project finally started to be functional. The 37.327 bins for recycling that were received through the project were distributed to the citizens and throughout the city. Every house received a pamphlet in which was explained what and where to throw. At last, Sibiu was doing something substantial to save our environment.

But after the implementation of this long waited project, we might ask ourselves what is the actual benefit from it? Why was it so important to start recycling and why did some people long so much for this to happen?
