LINOLEUM (LINO) Lino has a bad wrap from the 1970s and is often confused with vinyl flooring, which is made from harmful chlorinated petrochemicals. Lino is created from a concoction of linseed oil, cork dust, tree resins, wood flour, pigments and ground limestone - with a natural jute backing. All ingredients are completely natural and come from renewable sources which are also 100% biodegradable. Lino comes in continuous rolls or tiles in an array of colours to suit your decor. It’s hardwearing, great for wet areas and is easy to clean. It’s also great for asthma and allergy sufferers. Be Aware - there’s no real downside to lino (other than perception). RUBBER There are two types of rubber flooring - natural and synthetic. Only 10% of rubber flooring on the market is natural, made from the latex sap of rubber trees. It gives off no toxic fumes as opposed to synthetic rubber which does. Natural rubber flooring is very durable, water resistant, easy to clean and feels great to walk on. It comes in tiles or continuous rolls in many colour and pattern options. Be Aware - rubber can sustain scuff marks on smoother types plus dents from furniture. STONE Natural stone tile like limestone, slate, quartzite, travertine and marble has a time- less aesthetic. Stone is a natural, non-manufactured material straight from the earth. It does not require chemicals, stains, glazes or solvents to manufacture. Stone can be sustainable if sourced locally. It can be recycled, that is, crushed into smaller pieces at the end of its useful life and re-used in the building industry. Be Aware - application and laying down of stone tiles may contain solvents and therefore, toxins. Floor Rugs In the market for a new floor rug? Steer clear of those made from petroleum-based synthetic fibres that off-gas VOCs and contribute to poor indoor air quality and adverse health effects. Instead, opt for carpets and rugs made entirely from natural materials that won’t off-gas. Most natural materials are biodegradable and recyclable, so they won’t end up as landfill. WOOL Carpet is typically made of a blend of natural and/or synthetic fibres, containing toxic VOCs. A less harmful and eco-friendly option is wool. Wool is the ultimate sustainable fibre, renewable and abundant. It’s durable, naturally stain resistant, flame retardant and can be dyed any colour. 100% wool carpet should be backed with a natural fibre such as linen or cotton and 26
