EDITOR’S NOTE Sunny Side Up! During a recent holiday, I enjoyed my daily hotel breakfast, especially the eggs done sunny side up which is my preference. Perfectly soft, silky, golden and runny on one side, which in my opinion is the best way to start my day. Likewise, the term “sunny side up” in my view could be an analogy between the bright and positive start to a day, and our National Day Rally for this year with the common thread running through Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s address was that Singaporeans displaced from their jobs would need to get re-trained and re- skilled so that they can be better prepared to take up new employment. SUSS’s focus on lifelong learning gels with the Government’s call for all to upgrade themselves. The collaboration between SkillsFuture Singapore and our University offers that opportunity. Do not “kick the can down the road” as the saying goes. In other words, do not delay that opportunity. Before you are a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. - Jack Welch (Former CEO, General Electric) As a trainer, I have trained many unemployed Singaporeans wanting to be certified Security Officers under the WSQ Security framework. They seek a new career or opportunity to upgrade themselves using their SkillsFuture Credit. I have also heard many sad stories of how lives have been upturned because of being retrenched and displaced due to the poor global economic outlook. This is what I mean by the “sunny side up” effect of taking up new challenges for a positive start.
