The Millard Quaich U18 Championship
The U18 Championship for the Millard Quaich
The U17 Championship for the Mac Trophy
What a difference a week makes, with the U16’s playing in torrential rain and wind the week
before we arrived at Malden Golf Club on Thursday 8th August to brilliant sunshine and a light
gentle breeze. This year as well as playing for the U18 Championship, The Millard Quaich, Steve
McNeill, County Secretary kindly donated The Mac Trophy for the U17’s in memory of his father.
The morning round saw Barnes Wallis (The Addington GC) shoot a gross 2 under 69 to take the
lead in the clubhouse, with Leon Grapci (Royal Wimbledon GC) taking 2nd spot with 71, and Ben
Partridge (Epsom GC) and Rhys Williams (Foxhills) both on 73. After an excellent rolling lunch,
the boys headed out to more beautiful sunshine for the second round, which didn’t disappoint.
No less than four players shooting sub-par, Ben Partridge 2 under, Harley Yates (Burhill GC) and
Dylan Shepherd (Reigate Hill GC) both 1 under, with a special mention to Jack Osborne (West
Surrey GC) for an amazing 5 under, 66. The winner of the U18 Millard Quaich Trophy went to
Ben Partridge with a combined score of 141, Barnes Wallis taking the runner up position on 142
and Jack Osborne third with 143.
The U17 Mac Trophy was won by Barnes Wallis with his 142, Jack Osborne runner up on 143 and
in third place Harley Yates with 144.
We were treated to some amazing golf during the day and the winning scores reflected this.
Our thanks to Malden Golf Club for hosting this year’s Championship and looking after everyone
so well. The course was presented in excellent condition and didn’t disappoint.
Special thanks to Malden Golf Club’s Captain Michael Barnett who came up to watch the boys
tee off, Chris Gems, Acting Chairperson of Greens who kindly presented the U17 boys’ winners
with their prizes and Secretary/Golf Manager David Boyce for his support on the day.
Jack Buchanan, Surrey President, presented the winner of the U18 Millard Quaich Trophy.
U21 Colts Championship
On a somewhat wet and windy day the 2019 Surrey Colts Championships were held at
West Surrey GC on Thursday June 13th. Despite the recent deluge the course was presented
magnificently and would produce golf of the highest standard. The morning round saw Aadam
Syed of Foxhills lead the way with an excellent 69 (-2), closely followed by Charlie Crockett of
Addington Palace (71) and Conor Cull of West Byfleet 72, all 3 just having returned from college
in the USA. The afternoon round again saw some excellent golf in the damp overhead conditions,
notably from Roehampton pair Louis Tydeman & Alfie Fox who made birdies for fun early on
and although through late dropped shots still finished with 68 & 71 respectively in round 2, the
former being the low round of the day. Round 1 leader Aadam was freewheeling until bogies at
16 & 17 would see him first in the house on 142 (Level) after a 2nd round of 73 to add to his
morning 69. Multiple County age group winner Kevin Lee of Reigate Hill made a late charge
shooting an afternoon 69 to finish 3rd on 143, but following an unbelievable up and down birdie
from left of the final green, Conor Cull would add a 70 to his morning 72 and tie Aadam and we
had a playoff. Both players made par 5s on the first playoff off hole, the magnificent 18th, which
County President, Jack Buchanan would describe during the presentation as one of the best holes
in Surrey. On the second time down the 18th Aadam uncharacteristically hooked badly twice off
the tee, with Conor safely in the fairway and neither of Aadam’s balls being found he conceded
the playoff and Conor was the new champion.
The presentations were made by County President Jack Buchanan with Club President Angus
Lamont, who welcomed everybody to West Surrey.
Many thanks to West Surrey Golf Club for hosting a fantastic championship, the course was in
superb condition and everyone was looked after so well.
