to play first and he rolled the putt six foot past the hole. Harry putted from the fringe and left the ball inches from the hole for a tap in par. Sadly Barnes just missed his putt for par meaning that Harry took the trophy and is the 2018 U16 champion. The U15 Championship saw Benjamin Brew (Surbiton) take the victory with rounds of 81 and 71 for a total of 152. Three shots further back was Cameron Cridge (Addington Palace) with rounds of 77 and 78 giving a 155 total. Countback was used to decide the final place with two players tied on 156 strokes, Nathan Woodham (Windlesham) taking the place from Jack Osborne (West Surrey). Following the prizegiving and speech by the U16 winner, Harry Crockett, all the players and their parents made way home to prepare for their next event. Our thanks to Clandon Regis Golf Club for hosting this year’s Championship and looking after everyone so well. The Millard Quaich U18 Championship On the 23rd August Purley Downs hosted the 2018 Surrey Golf U18 Championship, despite the recent excessive hot dry weather the course was in excellent condition, such was the feedback from the players. With the greens receiving a special mention being very receptive and true. Unfortunately, as the first boy’s tee’d off at 8:15am the rain started, firstly as a light drizzle but then changing to a rather heavy downpour, although it only lasted for an hour or so, it clearly didn’t affect the players at all. This showed in the excellent scoring from the morning round with no less than nine players within 2 shots of the lead, with the recent U16 Champion Harry Crockett of Addington Palace leading the way with an excellent 69 (-1). This was without doubt a tighter grouping after the first 18 holes than for many years. After an excellent rolling lunch, the boys headed out in what was now beautiful sunshine for the second round. Which produced more great scoring again with Harry Crockett coming in with the best and only sub-par round but improving his morning score by one shot with a 2 under 68 to give him a 3 under par 137 total and his second County Championship of the year, both within the same month, he won’t forget August 2018! Absolutely brilliant. Runner up was Farnham’s Thomas Spreadborough who just pipped John Richardson of Royal Mid surrey into 3rd spot on count back, both boys had shot 70 in the morning and 70 in the afternoon for a level par 140 total, excellent and consistent golf. Purley Captain Jerry Scola presented the prizes and after a few words from the 2018 Champion Harry, all the players and parents made their way home. Our thanks to Purley Downs Golf Club for hosting this year’s Championship and looking after everyone so well. And finally many congratulations to Harry Crockett the 2018 County U18 Champion. 21 Colts Championship U On a lovely day at Addington Palace Golf Club a small but quality field took to the course for the 2018 Colts Championship, a 36-hole event. In the morning round three players, Harry Plowman-Ollington, Billy Whiteman and Gabriel Backers came in with the excellent two under par rounds of 69. After a fine lunch served up by the Club the players made their way to the 1st tee for the afternoon round. Along with most of the field the three leaders found if anything the course tougher during their second round. Billy shot a 73 for a 36-hole final score of level par, Gabriel finished with a 74 for a +1 total with Harry scoring a 72 for a -1 total and the Clubhouse lead. However, it wasn’t over yet, and Harry found himself in a tie for first spot with Harvey Byers who had shot a two over 73 in the morning round but followed this up with the lowest round of the day, an excellent 68 for a -1 total to match Harry’s score. With no other players equalling their 36-hole scores the two ex-school and County team mates would be in a sudden death playoff for the Championship. Harvey won the toss and choose to hit first on the par three 1st just missing the green to the right. Harry then hit what looked to - 34 -
