the younger players are gaining with the County, from their clubs and on the rookie tour at such a young age is invaluable. This match time and the quality within the squad is simply fantastic and as in past years bodes well for future Surrey teams. The pattern continues of younger and younger players getting into golf so we have more of the same too come. In order to facilitate a combination of competitiveness and never give up attitude the County match format used for these younger players is different from some that the older boys play. Although still playing scratch Four Ball Better Ball, each pairing plays for 1pt for the front nine, 1pt for the back nine and 2pts for the overall result. This way even if a pair loses the front nine and even the match overall they can still gain a point for the team by winning the back nine. Likewise if they win the front and overall they can still lose the back nine and a point, so thereby they have to keep focussed and play all 18 holes knowing it’s never over until the last putt. Surrey is extremely inclusive and recognises that age is not a boundary or show stopper to make the team. This was clearly demonstrated in the squad selections at U12, U13 & U14 over the last year. Surrey acknowledges if you are putting in the hard work, getting the results and show the correct attitude and mentality, you will be selected. The entire squad also take part in a series of squad practice matches that are played between the U12, U13 & U14 teams over the winter months, these matches included some older boys as well to demonstrate their skills and approach to matches. This keeps the squad members involved, competing, spending time with each other and gaining valuable experience from their fellow squad members and the players from the older squads who they may be playing with or against.
