An Outstanding Golfing Year St Georges Hill and Surrey Junior team member Angus Flanagan showed fantastic skills and Character to win the historic Carris Trophy, the English Open U18 Championship. Angus played superb consistent golf over the four rounds at Norfolk’s Hunstanton Golf Club. Shooting under par rounds of 69, 68 and 69 on the par 72 course Angus took a two shot lead into the fourth and final round. Despite his lead and continuing his excellent golf and mature attitude Angus soon found himself under serious pressure from Jacob Olsen, a Danish player who was quite simply playing the best round of golf in his life and setting a new course record of 62, ten under par for the day and giving him an -11 total for the four rounds. After dropping a shot on the 3rd then another at the 11th Angus realised that he had now been overtaken. But showing great character strength he trusted in himself and his talent to birdie the 15th & 16th which took him back to -11. Two pars at the closing 17th& 18th holes for -1 on the day and -11 overall meant he would be in a sudden death playoff for the Championship. At the first playoff hole both recorded pars, with Angus just missing a putt to win, then on the 18th Angus again found himself with a putt to win and duly sunk the 12 footer for birdie to claim a fantastic win. His name will now be added to a trophy alongside such names as Justin Rose. Angus has now been selected to represent England Boys in the Home Internationals, something that is thoroughly deserved. We at Surrey Golf are so very proud of one of our youngsters who have come through the ranks from a very early age playing in all the junior teams along with winning the Surrey U14 RookieTour, we wish him all the best in the Home Internationals and his future golf. - 4-
