Surrey U18 Championship The U18 Championship is always very competitive and attracts the top junior golfers from across the County. This year it was hosted by Clandon Regis GC and the results were as follows, 1st Tom Farrow Smith (Burhill) gross score 145 2nd Max O’Hagan (West Hill) gross score 146 3rd Will Hobbs (Wentworth) gross score 148 Carris Trophy The Carris Trophy is one of the most important junior events of the year (run by England Golf) and is the U18 Open Championship, and this year was won by Angus Flanagan (St Georges Hill). It was played at Hunstanton GC in Norfolk and Angus scored -11 under par over four rounds (69/68/69/71) - a fantastic achievement. Friendship Trophy We compete in this annual event that is supported by both the European Tour and Ladies European Tour. It is a 36 stroke play event with teams of 6 players (4 boys and 2 girls) and we take part from England then there are teams from France (Midi Pyrenees), Spain (Catalunya) and Germany (Nordrhein Westfalen). It was hosted by Spain and we played on the excellent Real Club de Golf El Prat – which has held the Spanish Open many times. We had won the event in the previous three years and took an excellent team with us (three England players) but were just beaten by Spain who played some excellent golf. The standard was extremely high with all teams including international players and our team was Martha Lewis (Captain), Ellie Lace, Angus Flanagan, Harvey Byers, Harry Plowman-Ollington and Alfie Fox. Alfie won the individual prize with scores of 70 and 72 – great golf in windy, difficult conditions on a very testing course. England Players We had three players represent us at England level – Angus Flanagan, Harvey Byers and Arrun Singh Brar. US Colleges A number of players each year go to College in the States and this year we had Tom Farrow-Smith and Max O’Hagan – we wish them well and both are excellent players. U16 Team - Manager Gary Barthram Surrey's U16 boys squad had a decent season finishing 2nd in their SE League group unfortunately just falling short. They did have good wins against BB&O, Middlesex and Hampshire in friendly matches with an away loss to Hertfordshire. 2017's SE league format changes slightly in that it mirrors the U18 league, consisting of 3 league matches with the winners playing two other SE England area winners in the final. Surrey's U15 boys often play for the U16's but have 2 matches dedicated to them. The first was a good friendly win against Dorset which provided a great warm up for our prestigious annual match against the Wales national U15 team. This year we narrowly lost but all of the boys fought hard, the boys will be looking to go one better next year!
