Previous years have seen an exceptionally strong U13 squad with a huge number of players to select
from. To follow the record set by these players would be extremely difficult.
This unfortunately proved to be the case for this year's U13 squad who in most matches were
supplemented with 4-5 U12's. All of these players demonstrated and are extremely good players, the
year's results did not indicate the closeness of some matches which came down to the wire. In some
instances particularly in Triple Shield matches one result would have made all the difference.
The team has gained valuable experience for those U13's stepping up from U12's. Some of the younger
players that remain in the U12's or come in to U13's this year have made that jump earlier and this can
only help moving forward.
Just like the U12 friendly matches the Four Ball Better Ball format with 1pt for winning each nine and
2pts for winning the match was used in some of the friendly matches.
The U13's lost their first match away to Essex, which was followed by a lose to BB&O but a draw with
Hertfordshire in the same match.
The Triple Shield match between Surrey, Kent & Sussex was hard fought and Surrey led at the halfway
point. Unfortunately Surrey could not hold on to this and Sussex ran out winners.
In the triple match against Sussex and Hampshire for the Friendship Trophy the boys unfortunately lost
with a nail biting finish. Once again Sussex took the trophy.
The players have seen how close the Triple Shield matches have been and how one result either way can
result in the trophy changing hands. They will take this forward, bounce back in their next age group
and most certainly learn from it.
Thankfully the U13's signed off the year on a high beating Hampshire 15.5pts-8.5pts. Some great
character and resolve was demonstrated and certainly lessons learnt from previous close defeats ended in
a goof win.
