As it has been for the past few years we once again had an U14 squad that were possibly one the strongest group of players Surrey has have ever had at this age level. There is no doubt the quality within the County just continues to get better and better. With so many players of such a high standard the biggest problem for the coaches and me - as it is in the younger squads - was who to leave out of the squad or matches. By the end of the season there were no less than 26 players across the U12, U13 and U14 squads who were single figures with the lowest at 4 handicap! Apart from the annual friendlies that are played each year with the other Counties the real focus for the U14 team was the U14 Inter Counties League which is contested by Essex, Kent, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Surrey and Sussex. The Counties are drawn into two zones of three with the winners of each zone playing a final to determine the champions. In 2014 Surrey lost the final to Hertfordshire but in 2015 after comfortably winning their zone gained revenge by beating Hertfordshire in the final in a hard fought match. There was also the “Sussex Salver”, a triple match played annually against Sussex & Hampshire Surrey were the holders and had been for four years and with this terrific group of players they weren’t going to let it go out of the County and they didn’t by scoring a fine win to retain it for the fifth year, a fantastic achievement. The season had without doubt been an excellent one this age group of players.
