As in previous years the U13 squad again had a very successful year, losing only once in a hard fought
battle against Sussex in the Triple Shield match, where we had ten of our regular players away. Despite
this the team did Surrey proud and only lost effectively on count-back to Sussex whilst comfortably
beating Kent.
The in-depth strength of the squad was so good that in some of the friendly County matches if the best
team had been put out they would simply have totally overwhelmed the opposition. So the lower
handicappers were rested, this also had the advantage of giving every member of the squad the
opportunity to play and gain great experience. And it has to be said that these teams still won their
matches comfortably which is a testament to the quality and depth within the squad.
Just like the U12 friendly matches the Four Ball Better Ball format with 1pt for winning each nine and
2pts for winning the match was used in some of the friendly matches.
In the triple match against Sussex and Hampshire for the Friendship Trophy the boys comfortably
retained the trophy, something they were determined to do to gain revenge over Sussex for the d efeat in
the Triple Shield.
With so many excellent players at such a high standard the most difficult part for the coaches and me his
year was who to leave out of a match. It cannot be understated just how strong this squad is. The future
is most certainly very bright for Surrey.
