SURREY GOLF TEXT 2016_Surrey Golf Inside 06 03/03/2016 07:42 Page 25 The Hampshire match at Petersfield resulted in a defeat for Surrey 3 – 7. As this match fell in the week of the Open we found that several of our players were unavailable due to work commitments. The Seniors six-man Qualifier at Thorpeness was a disappointment. On the face of it we had a strong squad but the players found the conditions very difficult and did not cope well. We went into this Qualifier with high expectations and finished in a lower position than for several years In the Southern Counties Foursomes qualifying round at Reigate Hill. Surrey won in the morning against BB&O and so met Sussex in the final in the afternoon. Sussex got off to a good start and maintained their momentum all afternoon to run out winners 3½ - 1½. The final League game was against Sussex at Tandridge. The course was in superb condition despite heavy rain in recent days. Throughout the match the teams were very evenly matched to the extent that six of the games finished on the 18th with four of those being halved. The final result was 5 – 5. In October we had the annual match against the Surrey Senior Ladies at Effingham. A most enjoyable day with good golf played in an excellent spirit. This year there have been two very notable successes by Surrey players; firstly, congratulations to Ian Attoe for winning the English Amateur Seniors Championship and then going on represent England in the European Seniors and Home Internationals; secondly, to Keith Waters, the Surrey Seniors Champion for both last year and this year, on winning the England Golf Seniors Champion of Champions Trophy at Woodhall Spa. In conclusion, a rather disappointing season which with the quality of players in the squad we would have expected better results. As I hand over to Billy Mitchell I wish him and the Surrey Seniors considerable success in the coming years and would like to thank all the Surrey Seniors players of recent years who have given me so much support. JUNIOR REPORTS FROM ALAN PAGE (WITH REPORTS FROM STEVE MCNEILL) Our main match is an annual fixture against Wales and this year they hosted us at Whitchurch GC – just outside of Cardiff. We took a team of 8 players with us over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd August and it is normally a 36 hole event with foursomes in the morning followed by singles in the afternoon – however, the Welsh weather changed our plans and we played 18 holes as 4 ball better ball as we could not play 36 holes as the course flooded quite badly. We knew we had a very strong team and I am very pleased to say that for the first time we beat the Welsh on their home soil. We won 3 matches to 1 and all the players played very well in some poor conditions. Our team was Kevin Lee, Adam Syed, Darragh Monaghan, Tom Spreadborough, Tom Whiting, Tom Maddock, Jack Finch and Lorenzo Horwitz. In addition to this we played Dorset and hosted them at Chobham – the first time we have had this match. We used it as a warm up for the Wales match and Christian Mucklow played instead of Lorenzo Horwitz and we beat Dorset very convincingly winning all matches apart from one which was a draw. So our results were played 2 won 2. Our Captain for the year was Kevin Lee (Cuddington). U16 Team - Manager Alan Page The U16 have a busy programme and this includes both friendly matches and we also take part in a League with other local Counties. During the year we used 25 players (for both U15 and U16 matches) from across the County and had two Captains and they were Owen Kressinger-Dunn (Walton Heath) and Sam Barthram (St Georges Hill) The League involves us, Kent, Essex and Sussex and we each play one home and two away matches. We played extremely well in all of our matches and only lost to Essex (away at Stapleford Abbotts) and went onto to win the League quite comfortably. In our friendly matches we played and beat Hampshire (away at North Hants), drew with BB&O (at West Hill) and lost to Herts at Betchworth Park. So our results were played 9, won 7, lost 1 and drew 1 - 25 -
