SURGIA Newsletter: General Surgery Edition Volume II Issue 1 | Page 6

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the 2nd Edition of the SURGIA Newsletter: General Surgery Edition. Following the success of our Neurosurgery edition, SURGIA has been hard at work to produce this professional, educational and inspirational publication. In 2015, SURGIA produced 25 events across Gold Coast and Brisbane and was awarded the Most Outstanding Club Website, a finalist for Cultural Club of the Year and also placed overall first in the RACS Surgical Skills Competition. Credit must be given to SURGIA’s 2015 Executive who were passionate and talented. Membership peaked at 1000 members, with over 200 professional members and 800 student members! This year, SURGIA has already begun demonstrating how we are determined to foster surgical interest, whether it be through networking and socialising events such as the Mentor Mixer, The Amazing Race and MS Swimathon, or through academic interest events such as Pathways, Research and Professionalism and evidently through practical workshops such as our Basic Suturing Workshop, Advanced Surgical Skills Workshop and Clinical Anatomy Workshops. We have been planning a more streamlined approach to SURGIA events, by encompassing events into major categories, such as SURGIA Neuromonth, consisting of our Neuroanatomy workshop alongside a Neurosurgical Walkthrough Seminar and Neurology Red Flags by GPSN. By the end of the year, we will have delivered a total of 4 SURGIA-themed months, including Orthopaedic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery and GIT / Reproductive Surgery. In addition to these, SURGIA members can expect invitations to Advanced Skills Workshops, Advanced Life Support Workshops, Trauma Symposium and Transplant Symposium to name a few! 3 | SURGIA Newsletter The General Surgery Edition As SURGIA continues to grow, we have a greater need to communicate with members, reward members and gain feedback from members. Our very own Dr David Maletsky has been a pioneer of SURGIA’s professional marketing from the creation of the website to the newly developed mobile application. With this application, all members have access to exclusive membership benefits such as discounts and deals at Burger Urge, Charlie Lovett, Café Rossa, Sushi1 and Doctor’s Orders Canteen! Furthermore, this provides members with a tailored communication system, so that they may receive notifications about events that truly interest them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gold Coast Private Hospital and Griffith University, our Corporate Partners, who have supported SURGIA from the beginning. Their support has been critical in allowing us to deliver incredible events and invest more into the future of surgery. I am very proud of SURGIA’s past achievements and I am determined to drive SURGIA towards achieving the goals of our founders. We continue to be one of the leading surgical society’s in Australasia and will endeavour to promote the profession of surgery through the provision of networks, education and inspiration.
