BASIC SUTURING
WORKSHOP
by Ning Zhu, Director of Skills
F
ollowing the overwhelming success of last
year’s suturing workshop, SURGIA was proud to
reinvent and reinvigorate the suturing workshop
in 2016 on a much greater scale.
Thanks must be given to all the doctors and
surgeons who volunteered their valuable time
to come in and pass on their skills to the next
generation of surgeons; thanks also to the two
executive teams that were able to put together
these incredible workshops: Daniel Byrant and
the Brisbane Committee as well as Ning Zhu and
his team down at the Gold Coast; thanks to Gold
Coast Private Hospital for sponsoring the event.
EVENT REPORT
The annual basic suturing workshop took place
over two nights, in both Brisbane and on the Gold
Coast. Over 450 students across Queensland
Universities: University of Queensland, Bond
University and Griffith University, were given the
opportunity to learn the techniques and skills of
basic suturing. The workshops featured 3 main
suturing techniques: simple interrupted suture,
horizontal mattress suturing and vertical mattress
suture, which were taught with a variety of
educational methods, ranging from SURGIA’s very
own video tutorials, SURGIA’s newly developed
diagramatic print-out resources and of course
demonstrators consisting of consultants, registrars
and residents across Queensland. In addition, we
were also able to offer opportunities to Griffith
dentistry students, with Dr Ryan Goh and other
maxillofacial surgeons teaching specialised
intraoral suturing techniques.
