NEW ROBOTIC SURGICAL SYSTEM PUTS GOLD COAST PRIVATE AT THE FOREFRONT Article submitted by Gold Coast Private Hospital T he new Gold Coast Private Hospital has the latest in robotic technology to assist in surgery for a range of health issues. The $3 million da Vinci Xi Surgical System can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimised for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynaecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery. Gold Coast Private general manager David Harper said he had always planned to provide patients and doctors with robotic technology and now that the evidence was there to support this latest system he was thrilled to be the first on the Gold Coast to secure it. “Over the past decade there has been significant advances in surgical treatment procedures and it has always been our goal to provide patients with minimally invasive surgical options through robotics,” he said. “This latest system has broader capabilities than prior generations of the da Vinci, allowing surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. “We are pleased to be a leader in this field and believe the introduction of the next generation da Vinci Xi Surgical System will greatly benefit our doctors and patients.” The system enables efficient access through the abdomen or chest, more precise movements through its intuitive motion and ergonomic design, and a highly magnified view, virtually extending surgeons’ eyes and hands. “While our doctors remain 100 per cent in control of the surgery, the robots have small wrist instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist and the software can minimise the effects of a surgeon’s hand tremors on instrument movements,” Mr Harper said. “The system is an expandable technology platform that is designed to accommodate and seamlessly integrate a range of technologies, as well as future 15 | SURGIA Newsletter The General Surgery Edition Dr Yang Sun Urologist & Robotics innovations, in areas such as imaging, advanced instruments and anatomical access. “By investing in an adaptable system, Gold Coast Private will continue to provide its doctors and patients with the latest in robotic technology now and into the future.” Mr Harper said the new $230 million Healthscopeoperated facility was the first acute private hospital to be built on the Gold Coast in more than two decades and would herald a new era in healthcare for the region. “All the equipment and technology at Gold Coast Private is either brand new or has been purchased within the last 12 months, making us the most technologically advanced private hospital in the city,” he said. “The flow-on effect of offering one of the most modern private hospitals in Australia is that we have attracted the highest quality doctors and staff. “This appeal is further fuelled by our co-location and partnership with the Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University and the Health and Knowledge Precinct.” Gold Coast Private includes a 24-hour Emergency Care Centre, ICU and special care nursery and provides services including maternity, cardiac, rehabilitation, oncology, renal and paediatrics. The hospital is also supported by onsite providers of imaging, pathology and pharmacy.
