IMF: INSTITUTE OF MATERIALS FINIHSING
Webinar Report
Tuesday 3rd September
saw the IMF host a webinar
entitled The Use of Paints
and Coatings to Protect and
Enhance the World around
Us! Given by the Secretary
General Graham Armstrong.
Graham asked the question as to why we use
Paint and listed the reasons for its use such
as providing colour, protection against
corrosion and erosion.
correct pre-treatments
on each type of material
successful corrosion
prevention should be
achieved.
Besides Paint,
applications of slurry
coatings and
Electrophoretic coatings
were described
especially where
applications involving
the possibility of Heat &
Fire are likely
highlighting for an
example that ‘The
Shard” uses several
thousands of litres of
Intumescent Paint on the steelwork to
protect the structure from failure in
case of Fire.

He then went on to discussing how many
areas in the average house is painted such
as Walls and Doors together with
personalised items.
This followed on with Transport and where
paint is used on items such as Trains and
Boats and Planes and not forgetting Cars
and Bicycles.
He also highlighted that paint was not only
used for the “pretty, glossy bits” that we see
but also the ‘bits’ that we don’t see such as in jet engines to aid fire
resistance, wear resistance and anti-corrosion.
He also discussed the implications of it all going wrong.
Failure mechanisms such as incorrect preparation of the substrate will
lead to these types of corrosion and this can affect all metals but will
manifest itself differently depending upon the material.
Steel, Aluminium and Magnesium corrosion mechanisms were
discussed together with Galvanic Corrosion, chemical corrosion and
the effect of heat and fire.
Graham explained how surface coatings can help and by using the

Finally, Graham discussed
Environmental & Legislative controls
whereby traditional pigmentation, resin
systems and solvents are being phased
out and or replaced to meet modern day requirements. And ending
the webinar with the statement:

“Paint; A Simple but Complex Subject”
The webinar was well attended and welcomed, and it is the intention
of the IMF to continue with webinars hopefully on a monthly basis
throughout next year.
Information regarding the webinars can be found on the IMF website
and also in the latest copies of IMFormation.
