YOU SHOULD FOLLOW
James Gradwell is a travel
photographer and photography tour
guide who’s plied his trade in over
30 countries, including remote and
underrated gems like the flower-
carpeted valleys of Kyrgyzstan.
But Gradwell’s favourite springtime photography location
is much closer to home: the ancient forest behind Table
Mountain, where secret, transient streams come to life after
the winter rains. Although largely drawn to capturing natural
beauty, Gradwell’s ability to shoot across multiple genres
means his work tells a rich story with every frame.
SURE TRAVEL JOURNEY: What’s the best way to
photograph Namaqualand’s spring flowers?
JAMES GRADWELL: Photographing this event is different to
normal photography in that you avoid the “golden hours” and
instead make use of the brightest hours (9am-3pm), when the
flowers are open. I advise travelling with the sun behind you, as
the flowers fa ce the sun – although personally I prefer to shoot
into the sun for a backlit effect.
What’s the secret to capturing a really great travel image?
There are many ingredients that go into a great travel image:
the light, composition and, of course, capture technique.
But one tip I would give is to try and tell a story using three
ingredients: people, places and objects.
Any bucket-list destinations?
My bucket list just keeps growing! Antarctica and the northern
lights are a couple of things I dream of shooting.
What are you up to at the moment?
My focus for now is creating a photography-location app unlike
anything else done before, due to launch in the next couple of
months. (Follow Gradwell’s work on jamesgradwell.com, or on
