MEET THE PEOPLE MAKING THE JOURNEY FOR WINTER 2017
MONDE SITOLE is an adventurer, alpinist,
poet, entrepreneur and youth leader
from Khayelitsha, who is on a mission to
conquer the seven summits – the highest
peaks on each of the seven continents.
He’s already ticked three off the list
and plans to conquer the giant, Mount
Everest, at the end of this year. He’s also
the founder of the Desert Rose Adventure
Club, an outreach programme for young
people, and The Monde Sitole Foundation,
which runs various initiatives to educate
and inspire youth. His pioneering work and
zest for life are why he made it onto the
Mail & Gaurdian’s prestigious 200 Young
South Africans list last year. Turn to page
58 for a few more reasons.
LUCY CORNE
is a freelance
writer with
incurable
wanderlust.
Her itchy feet
have taken
her to over
50 countries
across every
continent bar
Antarctica,
but it is South Africa that she has chosen
to call home. Lucy writes about travel
and beer and is the author of two books
that document the South African craft
beer scene, which she writes about in this
edition (page 50). Check out her blog at
www.brewmistress.co.za.
RICHARD HOLMES
is a freelance travel
writer based in Cape
Town. Although he
objects (mildly) to his
six-year-old calling his
far-flung assignments
“Daddy going on
holiday again”, he’s yet to come up with
a good reason for how travelling the
world and writing about it can actually
be called work. For now, he’s happy to
pack his bags and head for the airport,
as he did this issue for our feature on
up-and-coming Myanmar (page 36).

FRANKI BLACK
is a South African
travel writer living
in London. She
has worked in a
Costa Rican jungle,
on yachts in the
Caribbean and in the
African bushveld. In
her spare time you’ll find her learning to
ski (page 42), hiking across Europe (page
46), running or cycling somewhere in the
wild, reading, or playing the guitar in a
band. Read more about Franki’s active
adventures on women4adventure.com
and follow her on @women4adventure.
