The last time we went on a big, fat family
holiday – with all the siblings and our
respective partners and kids, all in the
same house over Christmas and New Year
– it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
There was the inevitable fight over
30 Seconds, barbs thrown over old
disagreements, the odd tear and the
usual frustration when trying to make
group decisions about what to do and
where to go.
I like to think we’re not unique, though
– every family has tensions, differences
and “politics” of some sort. It wouldn’t
be normal otherwise. But there’s no
matching the quality time we get to
spend with one another – time that can’t
be replicated in “real life”, when we’re
all constantly distracted by work and
responsibilities. The occasional minor
squabble or temper tantrum (by kids, for
the most part) can’t take anything away
from this. In fact, squabbles are part of
the whole experience, because no holiday
that involves family – of any age – is
ever perfect.
You can’t control what will happen on
a family holiday, but by choosing the right
destination, travel style and activities to
keep everyone happy, you can ensure far
more good memories than bad.
The idea behind this family-themed
edition of Sure Travel Journey is to
help you do just that. From what to
consider when choosing a family safari
(page 26) and the benefits of combining
business and holiday on one trip (page
18) to tips for keeping the kids happy,
straight from the pint-sized travellers
themselves (page 20).
We’ve also predicted the top five
destinations for family holidays in 2020
(page 38) and collected a range of real
family travel tales of all sorts, from
an intergenerational family holiday in
Mauritius (page 46) to travelling to
Finland to connect with relatives long
gone (page 32) to a roommate’s reunion
road trip through the Karoo (page 61).
We spoke to a young family who’ve
made travelling the world their source
of income (page 15), to a mother who’s
travelled the globe with five sons for her
work (page 14) and to people who were
taken out of school to travel for a few
years (page 56).
These diverse stories all have a
common thread: family travel is never
picture perfect (no matter how happy
you all look on Instagram!). Nevertheless,
whether it’s a simple road trip down the
coast or a five-star Mauritian holiday,
travelling with your tribe is priceless.
Happy (family) travelling.
