composting toilets, low-energy showers,

Security comes from the community, who
part-own the lodge and supply it with
food and other services; the lodge is an
enormous asset that they will not allow to
be compromised by thieving.
Regrettably, our walking came to an
end the next day in raging wind and rain.
We had planned to walk south towards
the Bashe River mouth but instead spent
the day hunkered down in the lodge.
Self-sufficient within the group till then,
we began making friends with people
from all over the world. The oldest were
an American couple, retired doctors
in their 70s, who were travelling with
their teenage granddaughter. Hard on
their heels came some Germans on big
motorcycles. South Africans were in
the minority.
The final adventure of the trip came the
next day in the shuttle, over a drenched
and muddy trail. Some of the more
religious (or desperate) passengers prayed
as we roared and slithered over ridges and
plunged through rivers. Our ancient driver
showed no concern, which I found deeply
reassuring. Eventually we got to a district
road that took us to the Coffee Bay road
and, from there, back to our cars and the
long drive home.
