13. Migrant workers taking action
What active membership means
Omotola’ s journey( see box on pages 76-77) shows how one worker can move from isolation and exhaustion to confidence and leadership. Becoming an Active Member has given her hope, connections and the ability to stand up for herself and others. It has also changed how her colleagues see her:“ Now they come to me for advice and support. I’ m not just on my own anymore. We are one family.”
This story underlines why UNISON promotes active membership. By taking that first step, members like Omotola become leaders in their workplaces, helping to turn anger into action and building the collective strength needed to win change.
This chapter highlights the power of organising collectively to confront abusive employers, and also how individuals can step up as leaders and inspire colleagues to join them. Together, they show that when migrant workers are supported to speak and act for themselves, the union grows stronger – and so does the possibility of lasting change.
