7. The consequences of dismissal: when a worker loses sponsorship
Ongoing support
• Follow up – regularly check how the worker is progressing with finding a new sponsor and regularising their status.
• Advocate for the member – help the worker appeal their dismissal, challenge it legally or raise concerns with employers, councils, or MPs.
• Offer peer support – encourage participation in migrant workers’ networks or UNISON support groups( see Further resources).
By acting quickly and offering clear guidance, union reps can make a significant difference in the lives of migrant members facing loss of sponsorship and removal from the UK.
