Local Students Develop Digital Skills
Careers Hackers (Left to Right): Niall Baum, Stephen Arnold and Keiran Collins
The National Careers Service has helped make it possible for enterprising students to work alongside one of the North East's most promising new software companies to launch their new careers portal, known as "Careers Hacker", which was developed over the summer as part of a new project.
Geek Talent, the World's first social network recruitment platform, has worked with students from Gateshead College and New College Durham to design and launch a new service which will give school and college leavers better access to job market information and opportunities.
Students participated in a 12-week summer school and were guided through the Google Launchpad process alongside the Geek Talent team to plan, design and launch the UK's first peer-built student careers advice portal.
Not all of the students had an IT or technical background; many worked in a wider variety of roles such as project management; students learned new skills, gained practical experience of using industry start-up practices and showcased their newly developed tool at a launch event held at Sunderland Software City.
The launch event proved a fantastic success and all students involved have gained a real insight in to the growing digital industry in the North East. Geek Talent were so impressed with the work of those involved that they employed Keiran (pictured above) as their new software engineer. Congratulations Keiran!
Could you be the next Geek Talent trainee web developer? If so, the company are currently looking for 5-10 young people without a level 3 qualification for their next intake. Apply at www.xiscad.co.uk/current-vacancies or call Laura on 0191 5166561
