ARLINGTON PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES , “ TURN AROUND , DON ’ T DROWN ” ART CONTEST
The City of Arlington ’ s Public Works Department is announcing the return of our “ Turn Around Don ’ t Drown ” art contest . This annual contest provides an opportunity for our 3rd grade students to illustrate the dangers of driving , walking , or riding a bike through flooded roadways .
Flooding can occur anywhere and at any time . Therefore , our community needs to be aware of the dangers presented by flooded roadways :
• 6 inches of moving water to knock an adult off their feet or cause the loss of control or stalling of a vehicle .
• 1 to 2 feet of water can carry away most vehicles including SUVs and pick-up trucks .
• The depth of the water may not always be obvious . The road maybe washed out under the water and you could be stranded or trapped .
The poster should be on 8.5 inch by 11-inch paper with the title “ Turn Around Don ’ t Drown .” Artwork must be created with crayons , map pencils or markers . Be sure to include the child ’ s name , age , parent or legal guardians ’ name and phone number . If a teacher is submitting artwork for their class , please include the child ’ s school , teacher ’ s name and phone number . All entries for the contest must be received by 5:00 p . m . First place will receive a $ 100 gift card , second place will receive a $ 75 gift card , third place will receive a $ 50 gift card and fourth place will receive a $ 25 gift card . Winners will also receive an Emergency Supply Kit and will be recognized at the Arlington City Council meeting on Tuesday , May 24 , 2022 .
This contest is open to all 3rd grade students in Arlington . Entries may be dropped off between 8:00 a . m . and 5:00 p . m . Monday through Friday at the Public Works Department ’ s receptionist desk , located on the second floor of Arlington City Hall , 101 W . Abram St . Artwork can also be mailed to : Public Works Department , Attn : Melissa Walker , 101 W . Abram St ., Mail Stop 01-0220 , Arlington , TX 76010 .
