6.1 ADOPTION: FROM EARLY PRODUCTION TO DOMINANT CHANNEL
In 2026, automated negotiation in procurement is in early production at a handful of credible operators. The Gartner forecast that 90 % of B2B buying will be AI-agent intermediated by 2028 implies an enormous acceleration. We are deliberately cautious here: Gartner ' s own Anushree Verma forecasts that over 40 % of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 [ 19 ] due to escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls. Both can be true. The realistic shape of the curve is bimodal: large concentrated wins in well-defined categories( tail spend, delivery-date adjustment, payment-term extension, data-space contracts) accumulate to the headline numbers, while attempts to apply the technology to bespoke strategic spend continue to struggle.
6.2 ARCHITECTURE: FROM BOLT-ON TO NATIVE
The 2026 architecture is HITL-first and bilateral, with a single buyer agent negotiating against a single seller. By 2030 we expect this to be replaced by multi-issue, multi-party protocols running natively inside data spaces, with the negotiation agent reading directly from a digital twin( the DTC testbed pattern) and posting commitments directly into ERP( the IFS pattern). Policy guardrails will move from procedural(" flag to HITL ") to declarative(" never agree to a term that violates X "), with formal verification of the guardrails themselves.
6.3 INTELLIGENCE: FROM HANDCRAFTED UTILITY TO LEARNED PREFERENCES
