3.3 BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS
Survey evidence indicates rising stress levels in procurement teams in recent years. Keelvar ' s Voices of Sourcing 2023 survey reports that 55 % of procurement teams experienced higher levels of stress and burnout, with 91 % of supply chains impacted by inflation, and identifies supply-chain disruption and market volatility as the top stressors [ 26 ]. To the extent that automated negotiation offloads the routine, off-hours " where is my delivery?" e-mail traffic from human desks, it may contribute to better working conditions; NEC ' s procurement-AI roll-out is framed in these terms, with procurement staff freed to focus on inventory optimization and demand-shift response. This effect is plausible but, to our knowledge, has not yet been studied with controlled comparisons.
4 FIVE DEPLOYMENT PATTERNS
Each pattern below is grounded in an NEC initiative reported between 2019 and 2026. The first four are production deployments or formal industrial testbeds. The fifth, in § 5.5, is an early-stage exploration— not yet a product or service offering of NEC— included to indicate where automated negotiation is likely to extend next, into the multi-stakeholder logistics layer of global supply chains.
SCOPE OF APPROPRIATE AUTOMATED-NEGOTIATION USE CASES
Before turning to the individual patterns, it is worth stating explicitly where automated negotiation is and is not appropriate, because the evidence in this paper comes from a specific class of problems. The demonstrated deployments are all highly structured, repeatable, operational-coordination decisions— delivery-date and quantity adjustments, tail-spend renewals, logistics coordination and standardised data-sharing agreements. These differ materially from strategic sourcing, custom engineering, complex professional services, intellectual-property and long-term-partnership negotiations, and highly regulated acquisitions, where terms are still legitimately negotiated case by case and human judgement dominates. Success in delivery-date adjustment should therefore not be read as evidence that the approach extends unchanged to the broader procurement domain. A further constraint applies across all patterns: automated negotiation is assumed to operate within a population of pre-approved suppliers and counterparties that have already passed the buyer’ s supplier-qualification gates( approved-vendor onboarding, cybersecurity and quality review, sanctions and export-control screening, and financial-viability checks). Supplier qualification is a prerequisite constraint on the negotiation architecture, not something the negotiation itself performs. The rough classification below summarises current suitability.
Current suitability can be summarised as follows. High suitability: delivery-date adjustments, quantity changes, tail-spend renewals, logistics coordination and commodity purchasing. Moderate-to-high: data-space and data-usage contracting. Moderate: strategic sourcing. Low: custom engineering contracts, professional services, and defence and other bespoke or heavily regulated procurement.
