In addition to developing its people to build capabilities, Nestlé also works closely with its partners through supplier inte- gration strategies to achieve excellence. Recently, Nestlé worked with CP Rail to find ways to remove costs from CP’s system, rather than transfer costs. By educating CP Rail about Nestlé’s business model and challenges, and with Nestlé learning more about what CP Rail values and needs, the two organizations found ways to improve accuracy, service levels and reliability, and reduce costs for both partners. As a result, in 2016 Nestlé’s dwell measure (the amount of time a container is idle) is track- ing 6.7 per cent ahead of CP’s top customers. This is a dramatic improvement from 2014, when Nestlé’s dwell was 56 per cent higher than the average CP intermodal customer.
