getting onto the water, learning about getting out there, connecting with nature and so on.”
The downside of this, George explains, is that during that time,“ There was a lot of rushed board production as factories went into overdrive to meet this new demand and lots of low-quality boards were pushed into the world. This wasn’ t just unique to SUP, and the sudden influx of products made governments and policymakers around the world sit up and take notice. They were forced to take swift action, quickly developing and establishing new legislation around product development, material and chemical use. As a result, there’ s a long list of thousands of banned chemicals, substances and‘ forever chemicals’ – not just driven by the EU or US but China as well. In short, policy makers suddenly became wise to the damage harmful chemicals have on individuals and the planet – it has been a long time coming, but it is a very positive step in the right direction, and one we at Red have been pushing for years.”
Why does this matter? Now this is where it gets interesting, says George.“ Customers on the whole don’ t have the time or desire to know at a granular level what goes into the products they use. They rightly expect companies to do that for them – but how many actually do? Here at Red, we are unique in that we collaborate with leading chemists to develop and test SUP adhesives and primers, as well as work with world-leading test houses to verify the absence of trace substances and ensure compliance. We don’ t actually have to do that – but we think it’ s the right thing to do. We have been working in this area for years, as we are passionate about looking after the outdoors. But for those who aren’ t – these new legislations mean whether they care or not, they have to start taking accountability and get serious about what goes into their products and how or where they are sold around the world”
This all poses new challenges that drive innovation, sustainability and perhaps most importantly – clarity for customers.”
