Seasons change

There’ s something about the shift in seasons that always makes me pause. Maybe it’ s the first crisp morning after a long, warm summer, or that sudden scent in the air – a mix of damp earth and salt – reminding you that nature is on the move again. The sea looks different too; its moods change with the light, the wind, the time of year. And much like the tides, we’ re all subject to change whether we like it or not.
Change, of course, can be daunting. It asks us to loosen our grip, to let go of the familiar rhythms we’ ve come to rely on. The steady hum of summer gives way to autumn’ s quieter tones; the long evenings shrink back, the wetsuit gets thicker, and sessions become fewer – but often, they’ re better. There’ s a clarity to these moments, a freshness that reminds us why we started doing what we love in the first place.
It’ s easy to resist change, to cling to the comfort of what’ s known. But the seasons remind us that nothing stays the same, and that’ s a good thing. Growth, creativity, even contentment – they all thrive on movement. Whether you’ re adjusting to new conditions in the surf, taking on a different project, or simply finding your flow in an unpredictable world, embracing what’ s ahead with an open mind is half the battle.
So as we shift into this next season – whatever that means for you – take a breath and lean in. Wax up the board, pull on the thicker neoprene, and paddle out. The waves may look different, the light might be lower, but they’ re still rolling in. Change is constant, but if you meet it with curiosity, all will be well. Tez Plavenieks, October 2025
