3 Ed ’ s note
Tis the season and all that ...
For getting out amongst it . If you haven ’ t done so already , now ’ s the time to dust off your paddle board , grab the crew , and head for a session . Air temperatures are warmer , the water ’ s getting warmer all the time , and we don ’ t need as much clothing . However , be aware not to ditch too much of your attire , as we ’ re not into full summer just yet !
Motivation can be an odd thing . Finding it can be tricky sometimes . When you have lots going on in life – some of it not always rosy – grabbing your kit and going for a float might be challenging . And yet , if you can muster the will , you ’ ll feel all the better for it .
Stand up paddle boarding is an accessible activity . The weather can sometimes put the kybosh on where you head for that SUP fix . But in a lot of cases , shelter can be found . Even if it ’ s not where you originally anticipated . But bagging a sesh is still bagging a sesh . And to reiterate : it ’ s an easy way to find the reset button and escape from the stresses and strains of modern life . Even if just for a short while .
As I said above , I understand ( more than most ) that sometimes , even with the best intentions , it might not be possible . In this instance , have no fear . SUP will be waiting for you when you can again .
Mental health and personal well-being , in relation to paddle boarding , have been discussed at length in recent years . But it still rings true . As much as anything , paddle boarding can be a great ‘ tool ’ for finding calm amidst chaos .

Farrel
Farrel O ’ Shea , 1963-2024 , RIP . Farrel ‘ Faz ’ O ’ Shea passed away doing what he loved at the beginning of June 2024 . Some may not know , as Faz didn ’ t shout about his achievements , but he was a naturally gifted waterman – across multiple disciplines – and a successful business and brand head . I knew Farrel as one of the original pro windsurfers from back in the day , a designer and creator of O ’ Shea SUP gear , a wing foiling ambassador , and an all-round teadrinking good egg . Always easy to deal with , accommodating , happy to chat and unassuming , Faz will be missed by many . If you don ’ t know who Farrel was and how he helped shape the UK SUP industry , look him up . It was a pleasure knowing and working with Faz . Rock ‘ n ’ roll , baby !
Enjoy the latest issue of SUPM , and maybe we ’ ll see you on the water . Tez Plavenieks , June 2024
