3 apples

before placing the pie in the oven. Cook for 20-
30 minutes.

SUNRISE
P.S. We all heard the phrase, “as American
as apple pie.” This beloved dessert, however, did
not originate in the United States. Another
American phrase, “for Mom and apple pie”
became famous during World War II, when this
was given as the answer by soldiers when asked
why they were heading for a war. This, in turn,
likely transformed into apple pie being known as
a symbol of America. The popularity of this
dessert among so many cultures may be
another reason of why an apple pie has become
a staple of America. In fact, the U.S. is a country
where so many cultures blend together.
The first written apple pie recipe goes
back to 1381 in England; it was printed by
Geoffrey Chaucer and included apples, figs,
raisins, pears and a pastry shell (but no sugar).
Are you bananas over an apple pie? If so,
celebrate on May 13 National Apple Pie Day.
