A Letter From the Editors

Miguel A . Blando & Paloma Llaguno
Living in a pandemic that confines people to small rooms and exemplifies the uncertainties of the outer world could be described as draining , boring , and even exasperating . It can feel incredibly overwhelming to wake up and repeat the same routine every day of every week . But , if seen through the right eyes , the COVID-19 breakout is a blessing in disguise . Often , we come up with excuses to stop keeping up with the news , reading new books , finding new hobbies , or having difficult , impactful conversations . Being in lockdown does not allow you to make those excuses anymore . In the words of ancient philosopher Lao Tzu , “ To say ‘ I don ’ t have time ’ is to say ‘ I don ’ t want to .’” Yet , we have now been given all the time in the world . Instead of spending another hour navigating the endless web of the internet , use that hour to begin working towards your goals . What do you want to accomplish ? What steps are going to get you there ? This quarantine is immune to your excuses , and by attending IMMUNS , you are taking the first steps towards self-exploration and accomplishing your goals .
Even if small , these actions are necessary at these times that mark an emotional and physical lockdown from one ’ s community and highlight the political and social divide present in the world . If respective authorities had not killed figures such as George Floyd , Breonna Taylor , and many others , movements like Black Lives Matter would not be at the forefront of the media today . The reality is that the pandemic has not damaged the world as much as it has helped us see the underlying problems that exist in our society .
During the simulation , make sure to have those important conversations with your fellow delegates because too often , it takes a tragedy to change society ’ s mindset . Take this opportunity to read through our selection of articles about ongoing issues in the world and its mysteries , such as defining happiness , addressing the pay gap in sports , or exploring the hidden wonders of Monterrey .
Finally , we would like to thank all of our MUN 11 peers and our amazing advisor , Ms . Marissa Aguilar , for allowing us to work by their side . Without your constant dedication , this year ’ s edition of SUNDIAL would not have been possible .
And to whoever is still reading this , remember that goals are never more faraway than your capacity to achieve them . As time passes , there will be new challenges for you to conquer ; whether it is another pandemic , the loss of a loved one , or simply failing an exam , it is up to you to come up with the tools to overcome these obstacles . Although you are still learning who you are and reaching the frightening heights of adulthood , move forward and make the best out of your teenage years because the world , as isolated as it may seem , is here for you to shape .
