Understanding the psychology behind effective incentive programmes is often the difference between outstanding success and outright failure. It is only when the needs and wants of programme participants are adequately addressed that an incentive will flourish. One specific want that is often overlooked is the desire and ability of an individual to share their success with others.

Uwin Iwin Incentives, with 21 years’ experience, knows that people are not as selfish as is commonly thought. Research conducted by Ask Africa confirms what we’ ve already found to be true: when participants of a large sample of incentive programmes were asked whether rewards should include their families or just be restricted to themselves, a whopping 79 % of respondents felt that rewards should include their nearest and dearest.
In other words, the possibility of bettering someone else’ s life can be just as, if not more, motivating than working solely for oneself. To clarify: the impetus to give and share appears to be a deep-seated human instinct not to be overlooked.

In July 2015, we designed and initiated an incentive programme that specifically addressed the need to move incentives beyond the individual to a wider audience. We are proud to say that its success has led to its indefinite continuation. In brief, the incentive addresses channel-partner sales, and while programme participants earn individual rewards, they were given the opportunity to nominate someone who would share in their achievements. Appropriately, the programme is referred to as“ Loved Ones”.
The reward mechanism for the incentive is relatively simple: participating channel-sales personnel are issued with a MasterCard Cash Card – called the Kudosh Card – as are their nominated loved ones. In a sense, the salesperson in question is therefore doubly motivated.
The response to the programme was immediate and extremely positive. Very importantly, the incentivising company was given the opportunity to gain tremendous insight into the people it relied on to represent its brand in the marketplace. For example,“ loved ones” were selected, and participants were invited to offer explanations as to why they nominated someone on a dedicated website. This is where the magic happened. Suddenly, names and figures on spreadsheets became flesh and blood human beings, with individual personalities, aspirations and, in some cases, notable challenges. In one example, when working through the motivations, the incentivising company noted the wish of a mother to help her son perform in his hockey career. He had been singled out as a player of particular ability, but his equipment was lacking. The company in question decided to go above and beyond the incentive programme, and purchased the equipment needed to play at provincial and national level. News of this spread quickly, and through this single act of goodwill, brand loyalty increased in immeasurable ways.
Without question, this type of intervention builds an enormously positive rapport between the company and its employees, which in turn
ultimately benefits both.“ Spreading the love”, as it were, is a definite win-win.
