Benilde-St. Margaret’s elimi- nated the Trojans from the Sec- tion 6AA playoffs 3-2, ending Wayzata’s 15-10-2 season. “The ebb and fl ow of the game started out a little bit rocky, and that was in our fa- vor,” Wayzata head coach Pat O’Leary said. It is no secret by now that the Trojans play a defensive style that forces opponents to the outside. Wayzata loves to take the body, loves to block shots, but the Trojans can also score goals. BSM took an early 1-0 lead in Saturday’s matchup at the Bloomington Ice Garden. Jackson Bisson found the back of the net with assists from Ian Bahr and Charlie Warnert. Wayzata bounced back lat- er in the fi rst period, taking a 2-1 lead. Defenseman Mi- chael North scored from Kyle Mortenson and Per Waage, and then Jack Kimlinger scored from Luc Monney and Tommy Bergsland. Blake Mesenburg’s goal tied the scored 2-2 in the second pe- riod, when he converted assists from Jonah Mortenson and James Callahan. Both teams had chances in the third period, but the only one that paid off was Cooper Gay’s goal for BSM. He was as- sisted by Mortenson and Sea- mus Foley. O’Leary pulled goalie Danny Fraga in favor of an extra at- tacker with 1:14 left in the third period, but despite Trojan pres- sure, the Red Knights were able to hold on for the one-goal win. The loss to Benilde-St. Mar- garet’s followed Wayzata’s 5-1 victory over Armstrong/Coo- per in the opening round of the section playoffs. “We had played them earlier in the season, and we knew they were going to play really physi- cal,” O’Leary noted. “Their goalie made some big saves ear- ly to keep them in the game. But we stuck to our game plan and used our depth. Five-on-fi ve, we felt we had the advantage.” That showed in the second and third periods. Monney and Jack Seamans each scored a pair of Trojan goals. Waage added another. Assists came from Colin Peters and Ben Lu- edtke with two each and Kim- (PHOTO BY MARK TROCKMAN - TROCKSTOCK.COM) Wayzata goaltender Danny Fraga is in perfect position to make this save during a 5-1 boys hockey playoff win over the Arm- strong/Cooper Wings Feb. 21 at Plymouth Ice Center. linger, Bergsland and Drew Goetz with one each. Wayzata goalie Danny Fraga earned the victory with 21 stops on 22 Wings’ shots. Looking back on some of the highlights of the season, two games that stood our for the Trojans were matching 2-2 ties against defending state Class AA champion Minnetonka. The Trojans had quality goal- tending throughout the season with Fraga and Trevor Wong, while Monney and senior cap- tain Joel Matthews led the of- fense. Both were among the top 10 scorers in the Lake Confer- ence, as was the senior captain on defense, Bergsland. “Our seniors left it all on the ice,” O’Leary said. “They did a great job of representing the Wayzata program.” Falcons earn medals in Section 5AA swimming meet By ANTHONY IOZZO [email protected] Armstrong High’s boys swimming team took home medals in all three relays and in three individual events Feb.21- Feb. 23 in the 5AA section meet at the Minnetonka Aquatics Center.
