Lighting up the sky on Fourth of July
For decades, Fourth of July fireworks over Lake Waconia have been as American as hot dogs, apple pie and baseball. Reflected across the waters of Lake Waconia, the annual display has long been one of the area’ s signature Independence Day traditions and one of the few fireworks shows in the Twin Cities region that can be enjoyed both by land and by boat.
Thousands of spectators gather each year along the shores of Lake Waconia to watch the show. Popular viewing locations include Lake Waconia Regional Park, In Towne Marina, Lola’ s Lakehouse, Island View Golf Club, Main Street and numerous lakeside vantage points. Many spectators also enjoy the display from boats anchored on the lake. Attendance has traditionally ranged from 10,000 to 15,000 people from Waconia and surrounding communities.
For many years, the event was organized by the Waconia Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, with support from the Waconia Lions Club, local businesses, civic organizations and community donors. The fireworks were made possible through sponsorships, donations, raffles and countless volunteer hours, while a dedicated team of licensed pyrotechnicians handled the allday process of preparing and launching the show.
In late 2025, the Waconia Chamber announced it would no longer host the annual fireworks display, citing rapidly rising fireworks, insurance and operational costs. However, the future of the tradition was secured when Sovereign Estate Winery stepped forward to take over sponsorship and organization of the event beginning in 2026.
As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, Sovereign Estate Winery is continuing the Lake Waconia fireworks tradition, ensuring that one of Waconia’ s most beloved community events remains part of the Independence Day celebration. Community leaders and organizers have emphasized the importance of preserving the event for future generations and maintaining a tradition that has brought residents and visitors together for more than three decades.
