‘ Big Black’ marching in the streets
In Waconia, it wouldn’ t be June without the Lake Waconia Band Festival, a“ bands only” parade competition that has become one of the highlights of Minnesota’ s summer marching band season. Hosted by the Waconia Band Boosters and made possible through the support of local businesses and more than 100 volunteers, the festival draws top marching bands from across the state and attracts an audience of approximately 3,000 spectators each year. In 2026, the Lake Waconia Band Festival will celebrate its 27th anniversary.
The festival is always held on the third Saturday of June. In 2026, the event will take place on Saturday, June 20. The parade begins at 6 p. m. and travels along Main Street in downtown Waconia, with Lake Waconia providing a scenic backdrop. Judging takes place on Main Street between Maple and Vine streets. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early, as many residents reserve prime viewing spots hours— and sometimes even the night before— the parade begins.
The parade features around a dozen of Minnesota’ s top marching bands competing for awards including People’ s Choice, Best Color Guard, Best Percussion Section and Best Wind Section. From precision drill teams and colorful guard performances to powerful brass sections and intricate percussion routines, the festival showcases the talent and creativity of student performers from across the region.
The Lake Waconia Band Festival has earned a reputation as one of Minnesota’ s premier marching band events. Organizers credit that success to the support of the entire community. From local businesses that help sponsor the festival to residents who welcome thousands of visitors to their neighborhoods each year, the event has become a community-wide tradition that brings Waconia together while celebrating the art of marching band.
The festival is also a testament to the popularity of marching band in Waconia. Over the years, the Waconia Marching Band— nicknamed“ Big Black”— has captured hundreds of grand champion and first-place awards and has marched in scores of national festivals and parades, including the 1976 Bicentennial parades in New York City, Washington, D. C., and Philadelphia. Today, the band continues that tradition of excellence while serving as an ambassador for Waconia and helping make the Lake Waconia Band Festival one of the community’ s signature annual events.
