Show choirs set stage for success
When Waconia High School’ s Power Company Family of Show Choirs program got its start in 1998, it featured 24 singers, a small rhythm section, a very small budget but most importantly, a ton of heart. Nowadays, the program is a legitimate powerhouse on the competitive show choir circuit in Minnesota, the Midwest, and beyond.
Approximately 300 students participate in the program, which currently has five groups that combine singing and dancing with elaborate costumes and props to create a thrilling 20 minute“ Broadway / Vegas” style show. The program’ s top group is Power Company, an award-winning varsity show choir that features around 50 singers, a 20 piece band called Megawatt and 10 stage crew members. Power Company routinely ranks among the best high school show choirs in the nation, as evidenced by its regular appearance on national top 10 show choir lists.
The Current is the high school’ s JV show choir and it features around 60 singers, a 20 member student-led band called Watt and several stage crew members. Illuminations, a second JV group, provides
additional opportunities for Waconia students to experience show choir. Pulse and Shockwave, which feature middle school performers, round out the program’ s other groups.
Power Company and The Current compete at several events throughout the season. One of the highlights of the year for Waconia’ s show choir program is Star Power,“ Where Show Choirs Shine,” aka The Lake Waconia Show Choir Invitational. The event draws thousands of spectators and some of the top show choirs from throughout the Midwest.
At Star Power, organizers work to provide an exceptional show choir experience for all performers, directors, adjucators and spectators. The event features outstanding facilities with state of the art lights and sound The next Star Power will be held in February 2026.
Waconia’ s show choir program also holds several special events, including an annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser in January, and the Show Choir Spectacular, which will next be held in March. For more information, visit www. waconiachoirs. org.
