LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
This winter has been somewhat of a weather roller coaster . We ’ ve had some of the hardest frosts in years followed by some above average 80 plus degree days . It has made keeping green speeds consistent a little tougher than usual this time of year . You will notice some variations in color throughout the greens and in some instances patches where some grass is really growing and some not . This is due to the many off type grasses and how they react differently to temperature variations especially cold . It is prominent on a few greens on each course . It is not something that causes long term health issues but does look different . Warmer temperatures ahead in the coming month will help improve the overall look .
As we head into the month of March we are trying to get many of the spring maintenance items covered . The bulk of our insecticide applications start up based on how quickly the spring temperatures rise . We are working to continue spreading cart traffic around as best we can . The staff will be doing added aerification and fertilizer to higher traffic areas . During this time of year with constant play on the two courses it means sometimes things like topdressing ,
Keep it green , verticutting or ninja tining have to be done in or around play . We do our best to minimize disruption to golfers , but to some degree it is a reality . Staff will also be working on cart path maintenance items . They will start on coquina shell areas first with concrete scheduled for the end of the busy season and the summer months . Look forward to seeing you out on the courses .
Earl McMinn Superintendent
