UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE 1743 – External Relations Benchmarking
To inform Dundee’ s development plans, this study examined the role, structure and resources of University External Relations divisions across five comparator universities in England and Scotland. We focused the study on student recruitment and admissions activity. The study resulted in a detailed report with recommendations for Dundee’ s senior management team, underpinned by our findings on structures, strategies, budgets and head-count at comparator universities. On the back of this work, SUMS has created a good practice guide to share wide-ranging insights with its Members about successful measures to boost international student recruitment.
UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX 1660 – Student Complaint
SUMS was asked to undertake an independent enquiry of a student complaint. Given the nature of this particular complaint the University was keen for there to be investigation by an independent and objective third party. SUMS interviewed those involved including the student concerned, presented our findings and decision, and brought forward recommendations for beneficial change.
1723 – Performance and Development Review and Appraisal
Essex asked SUMS to carry out blue sky review of their Annual Appraisal / Personal Development Review process. Internal interviews showed that people had a variety of views on the objectives of the process and that few thought it added value. Benchmarking other SUMS Members and other HEIs showed variations on a theme and similarly limited enthusiasm. Research outside the sector showed that many are abandoning the annual cycle and adopting more tailored approaches. Options to progress were identified and analysed.
1734 – Student Module Choice
Essex had been using a system for students to record their module choice for a number of years. For technical reasons the system will need replacing soon and SUMS was asked to review the current set-up to identify potential improvements for a new system. SUMS confirmed that the main elements of the system worked well and identified options to facilitate students’ choices and reduce clashes.
