Remarks to Adult Drug Court – Presentation of Carol Solberg Memorials

by Candy Schafer, CLA

WDALA lost a dear friend recently.

Carol Solberg, CLA, died February 25, 2019, following a brief battle with cancer.

Carol was a very active “WDALA Lady”, who very much enjoyed being a part of the Drug Court activities.

Carol was always one of the first to volunteer if there was a call for help. Her “cheesy potatoes” were always a big hit at every picnic; her Christmas goodies were always the tastiest; and you might have been lucky enough to receive one of her famous knitted Christmas stockings. If you were at The Santa Run, you saw her there with a smile and her red Santa hat.

Carol lived life to the fullest - with a multitude of interests and friends. She understood the importance of staying connected. And she recognized that there was “power in the group” - what we might not be able to do alone - we could do together.

Carol had a beautiful collection of angels. She is now one of them. She was a part of our group - and she was a part of yours. So whether or not you believe in angels - you have one of your very own now. Carol will be sitting on your shoulder - still a very important part of “the group”.

The WDALA Ladies want Carol to be remembered in a special way so in her honor we have purchased a new basket for the drawings. The Serenity Prayer is attached, as well as a charm that reads “In Loving Memory of Carol Solberg, one of the WDALA Ladies”. We hope this will be a reminder to each of you that people care - Carol cared.

We have also purchased graduation gifts - pocket tokens that will be presented to you in memory of Carol when you complete the Drug Court program. Another reminder that people care - Carol cared.

With the additional money we received in memory of Carol, we were also able to purchase movie passes that can be used for Spot Awards and for the weekly Incentive Drawing. We are making a donation to the ND Association of Drug

Court Professionals and a donation to the Runners Against Destructive Decisions (RADD) running program.

We ask that you think of Carol each time you place your name in the basket for the weekly drawing and that you remember that she is still here cheering for you and with you. And, as new members join your group - tell them about Carol - be a part of her legacy.

Thank you for the work you do every day in this program - for taking advantage of the opportunity to live a drug and alcohol-free life. It’s hard work - we can see that. Thanks for your smiles and your hospitality when we come to visit and for allowing the WDALA Ladies to be a part of your group.

And, today, most of all, thank you for helping us remember Carol.

In Loving Memory of Carol Solberg
